Cosmological simulations of galaxies, galaxy clusters, reionization and the intergalactic medium

I am a Senior Staff Scientist in the Cosmology and High-energy Astrophysics group of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP). My research uses large hydrodynamical simulations run on supercomputers to study how cosmic structures form and evolve. Major themes include the reionization of the Universe and the thermal state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) as probed by the Lyman-α forest, the formation of galaxies and galaxy clusters and the role of feedback.

Projects & collaborations

A selection of projects and simulation suites I am involved in:

PICO-Cluster

PICO-Cluster simulation

PICO – Plasmas In COsmological Clusters – is a suite of cosmological simulations of 24 massive galaxy clusters run at very high resolution with the AREPO code, using the IllustrisTNG galaxy formation model as a baseline. Simulations with more advanced physics will be added. pico-cluster.aip.de →

Thesan-Zoom

Thesan-Zoom simulation

Thesan-Zoom is a suite of high-resolution zoom-in simulations building on the Thesan project. It models the formation of galaxies during the epoch of reionization, following radiative transfer and feedback to connect simulated galaxies with observations of the early Universe. thesan-project.com/thesan-zoom →

Sherwood-Relics

Sherwood-Relics simulation

Sherwood-Relics is a large suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the intergalactic medium during and after reionization. It captures the relics of inhomogeneous reionization imprinted on the Lyman-α forest and the thermal state of the intergalactic gas. nottingham.ac.uk/astronomy/sherwood-relics →

Sherwood

Sherwood simulation

Sherwood is one of the largest suites of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the intergalactic medium and the Lyman-α forest, spanning a wide range of box sizes and resolutions to model the diffuse intergalactic gas across cosmic time. nottingham.ac.uk/astronomy/sherwood →

Fable

Fable simulation

Fable is a set of cosmological simulations of galaxies and galaxy clusters with detailed models for stellar and AGN feedback to study how feedback shapes galaxies and the intracluster medium. kicc.cam.ac.uk/projects/fable →
